The Paper Trail

Civil records reveal disputes between individuals or organizations. They are crucial for assessing character, reliability, and financial stability.

Lawsuits

Breach of contract, personal injury, property damage, and wrongful termination suits.

Judgments

Court orders requiring a person to pay a debt or damages. Indicates failed payments.

Restraining Orders

Civil harassment or domestic violence restraining orders that may not appear on criminal records.

Evictions & Foreclosures

Legal actions related to property, indicating potential financial distress or irresponsibility.

Upper vs. Lower Courts

Civil searches are complex because records are held at two distinct levels. We search both to ensure complete coverage.

  • 1
County Civil (Lower & Upper) Includes small claims (under $10k), family law, and larger disputes over $25k.
  • 2
Federal District Civil Cases involving federal statutes, civil rights violations, and interstate commerce disputes.

Civil Search FAQs

What is the difference between criminal and civil records?
Criminal records involve offenses against the state (e.g., theft, assault), prosecuted by the government. Civil records involve disputes between private parties (e.g., individuals or businesses), such as contract disputes, evictions, or negligence claims. No jail time is involved in civil cases, only monetary damages or injunctions.
Does a civil search include credit history?
No. A civil search looks for court records. While it may find bankruptcies or tax liens that also appear on a credit report, it does not reveal credit scores, credit card debt, or payment history. For that, you would need a separate Credit Report check (requires specific permissible purpose).
